The best leather boots and dress shoes you can resole

Our top pick is the Red Wing Iron Ranger, because it is the only shoe in this edit whose maker will resole it and prints the price: $165, or $180 with the full repair package, as of October 16, 2026. The Grant Stone Cap Toe Oxford is second and the dress-shoe pick, with the most completely documented Goodyear welt we read, from vegetable-tanned insole to leather outsole. The Thursday Captain is third and the value pick, a Goodyear-welted lined boot at $199 that leaves the resole to your cobbler. The Blundstone 550, the most popular boot in the category, did not make the list because Blundstone's own support site says its injected sole is not built to be resoled. All four grades come from product pages, support sites and verified owner reviews read on October 16, 2026; nothing was worn and nothing is claimed to have been. How we picked is below.

Our picks

A resoleable shoe is a different purchase from a disposable one, and the product page tells you which you are buying if you know the word to look for. Goodyear welt and Blake stitch mean the outsole is sewn on and can be cut off and replaced. Cemented and injected mean it is glued or moulded on and the shoe is normally retired when the sole wears through. Our field notes on construction explain the three methods; this guide applies the test to the shoes we have reviewed.

Three shoes pass. The Red Wing Iron Ranger is a welted work boot with a maker-run repair shop. The Grant Stone Cap Toe Oxford is a welted, leather-soled dress shoe. The Thursday Captain is a welted boot at the lowest price we could document. The Blundstone 550 is injected and sits in Also compared with its maker's own words for company.

Note the order. The Thursday Captain's overall rubric score, 4.0, is a tenth above the Grant Stone's 3.9, yet the Grant Stone ranks higher here. That is because this guide weights documentation of the construction and resole terms above price, and the Grant Stone names every layer a cobbler will touch while Thursday names fewer and publishes no warranty. The head-to-head between the two boots is in our Iron Ranger vs Captain pairing.

Best overall: Red Wing Iron Ranger

The Iron Ranger passes the gate with a Goodyear leather welt and then clears every criterion with a document. Construction: welt, steel shank, leather insole, cork midsole and Vibram 430 outsole are all on the product page. Resole: Red Wing's own shop, $165, or $180 with the Premium Repair Package. Warranty: 12 months on defects in normal use. Fit signal: 181 Zappos reviews, 86 percent five-star, 36 percent saying it felt a full size large.

The price is $349.99 in all six leathers as of October 16, 2026, with 30-day returns and free return shipping. The trade is comfort on day one: the leather is heavyweight and unlined, and owners describe weeks of stiffness. Nothing about that is hidden, which is the point. Why it sits at number one: it is the only entry whose maker documents construction, warranty, repair service and repair price together. Read the full Iron Ranger review for the repair price list and the sizing evidence.

Best dress shoe: Grant Stone Cap Toe Oxford

The Cap Toe Oxford passes the gate with a 270-degree Goodyear welt and leads the field on the first criterion, documentation. The product page names the insole, welt and outsole as vegetable-tanned leather, the filler as cork over a steel shank, the lining as full-grain kip and the upper as Italian calf, and the brand journal names the Italian town, the Pennsylvania outsole supplier and the Massachusetts welt supplier. The factory is stated: Xiamen Island, China.

It loses ground on the second and third criteria. There is no resole service and no price, no warranty in writing, and the return window is 15 days from delivery with a $15 restocking fee on refunds. Grant Stone also gives two fit instructions, true to size on the product page and half a size down on the help centre, so use the free exchange. Why it sits at number two: the most completely named construction in the edit, with the thinnest paperwork after the sale. The full Grant Stone review lists both sizing statements and the component origins.

Best value: Thursday Captain

The Captain passes the gate with Goodyear welt construction stated on the product page and Thursday's FAQ confirming men's boots are resoleable. At $199 it is the cheapest welted shoe we could document, and it adds a full glove-leather lining, a Poron insole over a cork midsole, two widths and sizes to 16. Thursday's fit advice is the clearest of the three: half a size down from sneakers, Standard width close to a D.

After the sale it documents the least. No warranty appears on any page read October 16, 2026. The factory is one of four countries, not named per model. The resole is a cobbler list with no price. Trustpilot's 3.0 from 655 reviews, split between five-star and one-star, is the largest independent sample in this edit and the most divided. Why it sits at number three: it is the best construction per dollar and the weakest on resole terms and warranty, which this guide weights above price. The full Captain review has the tier pricing and the Trustpilot themes, and the Iron Ranger vs Captain pairing sets it against the top pick row by row.

How each criterion was graded

Documentation of construction was graded on whether the maker names the welt type, the insole material, the filler, the shank and the outsole, and whether the factory is stated. Grant Stone names all of them; Red Wing names all but the filler by material; Thursday names the welt, midsole, insole and outsole but not the factory per model.

Resole terms were graded on a published service and price first, a written confirmation of resoleability second, and construction alone third. Only Red Wing reaches the first tier. Warranty and returns were graded on the published text: Red Wing 12 months and 30 days; Thursday no warranty and 30 days; Grant Stone no warranty and 15 days with a restocking fee. Fit signal was graded on sample size and consistency, with seller-hosted counts noted as such and Trustpilot quoted with its caveats.

How to choose a shoe you will actually resole

Start with the attachment word, not the leather. If the page says Goodyear welt, storm welt, stitchdown or Blake, the shoe can be resoled. If it says nothing, check the support site; Blundstone's answer lives there, not on the product page.

Then find out who does the resole. A maker with a repair shop and a price list, as Red Wing has, removes the biggest unknown. A maker that confirms resoleability and gives a cobbler list, as Thursday does, leaves the price to your area. A maker that says nothing beyond the construction, as Grant Stone does, is relying on the welt to speak for itself.

Read the warranty for what it covers after the sale. Sole wear is excluded everywhere; what differs is whether a split welt or a failed heel at month nine is a claim, a paid repair or your problem. Red Wing gives 12 months, Blundstone two years on manufacturing faults with long exclusions, Thursday and Grant Stone nothing in writing.

Finally, check the return window against your ability to try the shoe. Red Wing, Thursday and Blundstone give 30 days. Grant Stone gives 15 from delivery with a $15 restocking fee on refunds, which is fine if you try the shoe the day it arrives and a problem if it sits in the box.

Two smaller checks pay off. Look for a width option: Red Wing and Thursday list EE, Grant Stone lists E and sometimes EEE, Blundstone lists none and tells wide feet to size up. And look at the insole: a leather insole over cork, as on the Iron Ranger and the Grant Stone, is the structural layer that outlives several outsoles; a removable foam footbed is a comfort part that a resole does not depend on. A maker that names the insole material is usually one that expects the shoe to be rebuilt.

Also compared: the shoes that did not make the list

The Blundstone 550 is the obvious omission and the reason this guide exists. At $219.95 it is cheaper than two of the three ranked shoes and owners on Zappos call it true to size at a 73 percent rate across 237 reviews. But Blundstone's US support article says most of its soles are liquid polyurethane injected into a mould and bonded to the upper, and that the boots often cannot be resoled successfully. The company points buyers who want a replaceable sole to its Goodyear-welted Heritage Series, which we have not yet reviewed. The 550 is a good comfort boot and a replace-when-worn purchase, and the 550 review treats it as exactly that.

The Allen Edmonds Park Avenue was planned as the dress-shoe entry and is the long-standing reference for a recraftable American oxford. On October 16, 2026, allenedmonds.com and allenedmonds.ca returned a Cloudflare bot check to every method available to us, including a full browser, and the check required a human verification step this publication does not perform. No price, construction or recrafting figure could be read first-hand, so the Park Avenue is neither ranked nor scored. When the pages can be read, a review will be added and this list revisited.

Blundstone's Heritage Series, Thursday's Heritage Captain with its 270-degree welt and leather shank, and Red Wing's other Heritage lasts are all candidates for future entries. None is ranked until it has a full review on this site.

What a resole costs, from the only maker that says

Red Wing's repairs page is the one published price list in this edit, read October 16, 2026: resole $165 including oiling and new laces where applicable, heels only $60, Premium Repair Package $180 adding minor stitching, hardware repair and leather reconditioning. Red Wing notes prices may vary by store and offers a free shipping label for services over $50. Turnaround is not published.

Thursday and Grant Stone publish no resole price; the cost is your cobbler's quote. By our arithmetic, one Iron Ranger plus one Red Wing resole is $514.99 for two sole lives. One Captain plus a cobbler resole is $199 plus the quote. One Grant Stone oxford plus a cobbler resole is $395 plus the quote, and a leather sole will reach that first resole sooner than a rubber one. Two Blundstone 550s are $439.90 for two sole lives and two uppers.

Bottom line

If you want one boot the maker will stand behind and rebuild, buy the Red Wing Iron Ranger and order a half size down from your sneaker size with an exchange in hand. If you need a dress oxford and want every layer named, buy the Grant Stone Cap Toe Oxford and try it within two weeks of delivery. If the budget is $200 and a cobbler is nearby, the Thursday Captain gives you the same construction family with a lining and two widths. If you want a pull-on and do not care about resoling, the Blundstone 550 is a well-documented comfort boot that simply does not belong on this list, and Blundstone will tell you so. Our method explains what a documentation rubric can and cannot see, and the full boots and dress shoes edit carries every review as it publishes.

Best overall: the resoleable boot with a printed repair price: Red Wing Iron Ranger

The Iron Ranger is the only shoe here whose maker will take it back, resole it and tell you the price in advance. The product page for style 8111, read October 16, 2026, lists a Goodyear leather welt, a steel shank, a leather insole over a cork midsole, a Vibram 430 mini-lug outsole, S.B. Foot oil-tanned full-grain leather and Made in USA, at $349.99 in six leathers. The repairs page lists a resole at $165 and a Premium Repair Package at $180; the warranty page gives 12 months on defects in normal use. The costs are documented too: the leather is heavyweight and unlined, owner reviews describe weeks of stiffness, and 36 percent of 181 Zappos reviewers say it felt a full size large. Order down, exchange if needed, and plan on resoling rather than replacing.

It sits at number one because it is the only entry that documents the whole lifecycle: construction, warranty, repair service and repair price. No other maker here publishes a resole figure.

Best dress shoe to resole: every layer named: Grant Stone Cap Toe Oxford

The Cap Toe Oxford is the leather-soled dress shoe in this edit and the most completely specified welt we read. The product page, checked October 16, 2026, lists Goodyear-welt construction with a 270-degree flat welt, the Oliver last, Italian calf uppers, full-grain kip lining, a vegetable-tanned leather insole, welt and outsole, cork filler, a steel shank and leather heel counters, made in Grant Stone's factory on Xiamen Island, China, at $395 in D and E. The brand journal adds where the veg-tan hides, outsoles and welts come from. What it lacks is after-sale paper: no warranty, no resole service, a 15-day return window and a $15 restocking fee on refunds. It replaces the Allen Edmonds Park Avenue in this slot because the Allen Edmonds site could not be read.

It sits at number two, above the cheaper Thursday Captain, because this guide weights construction documentation and it names more of the parts a cobbler will work with than any other entry. It sits below the Iron Ranger because Red Wing publishes a warranty and a resole price and Grant Stone publishes neither.

Best value Goodyear welt: $199 with a lining and two widths: Thursday Boot Captain

The Captain is the least expensive welted shoe we could document, and the specification does not read like a budget boot. The Brandy product page, checked October 16, 2026, lists Goodyear welt construction, a full glove-leather lining, a cork-bed midsole, a Poron antimicrobial insole, a DuraEVA comfort strip and a studded rubber outsole at $199, in Standard and Wide widths from size 6 to 16. Thursday's FAQ confirms men's boots are resoleable and publishes clear fit advice: half a size down from sneakers. The gaps are after the sale. No warranty is published, the factory is a list of four locations rather than a name, and the resole is a cobbler list with no price. Trustpilot's 3.0 from 655 reviews, split between five and one stars, says the service is uneven.

It sits at number three because it passes the resole gate at the lowest price but documents the least after the sale: no warranty, no repair service, no stated factory. On a pure price-per-feature rubric it would lead; on a resole-and-support rubric it follows.

How we chose

Four shoes with full reviews on this site were ranked on one gate and four weighted criteria. The gate: the maker's own pages must describe a stitched construction, Goodyear welt or Blake, that can be resoled; a shoe whose maker says it cannot be resoled is listed under Also compared, not ranked. The criteria, in order of weight: how completely the maker documents the construction and materials; whether a resole service and price are published, or failing that whether the maker confirms resoleability in writing; the warranty and return terms on the record; and the verified fit signal from owner reviews on Zappos, the makers' own review widgets and Trustpilot, each quoted with its sample size and date. Rubric sub-scores for ease, features, value and support are out of 5 and are the same ones printed on each review. We did not run tests of our own; grades come from documentation, pricing pages and verified user reports checked on October 16, 2026. Prices are U.S. list prices read the same day. Ten-year cost figures are our arithmetic from published prices and are labelled as such. One planned entry, the Allen Edmonds Park Avenue, is absent because allenedmonds.com presented a bot verification step we do not complete, so no figure could be read first-hand.

Frequently asked

What is the best boot you can resole in 2026?

On our documentation rubric, the Red Wing Iron Ranger: Goodyear leather welt, a maker-run resole at $165 and a 12-month defect warranty, at $349.99 as of October 16, 2026. The Thursday Captain is the same construction family at $199 if you will use your own cobbler.

Can Blundstones be resoled?

Blundstone says most of its boots, including the 550 Classics, cannot be resoled reliably because the sole is injected polyurethane bonded to the upper. Its Goodyear-welted Heritage Series is the exception, per the US support article read October 2026.

How much does it cost to resole Goodyear welted boots?

Red Wing publishes $165 for a resole and $180 for its full repair package as of October 2026. Thursday and Grant Stone publish no price; an independent cobbler's quote applies. No maker in this edit publishes a resole turnaround.

Is a leather sole or a rubber sole better for resoling?

Both can be resoled on a welted shoe. A leather sole, as on the Grant Stone oxford, wears faster on wet pavement and reaches its first resole sooner; a rubber sole, as on the Iron Ranger and Captain, lasts longer between resoles. Grant Stone says leather soles can be worn in rain if dried naturally.

Why is the Allen Edmonds Park Avenue not on this list?

Because allenedmonds.com could not be read on October 16, 2026; it presented a bot verification step this publication does not complete. No first-hand figure was available, so it is neither ranked nor scored. It will be reviewed when the pages can be read.

Do resoleable shoes need a break-in?

The makers do not publish break-in periods. Owner reviews describe weeks of stiffness for the unlined, leather-insoled Iron Ranger and a softer start for the lined, foam-insoled Captain. Grant Stone's sizing journal warns that a tight Goodyear-welt shoe will not improve with wear, so size for comfort on day one.
