Garmin Forerunner 265
A 47 g AMOLED running watch with multi-band GPS, 20 hours of GPS battery and a standard 22 mm strap, still at its $449.99 launch price
Scored on the published rubric, from documentation, pricing and verified user reports.
Best for: A runner who wants a dedicated GPS watch with a bright AMOLED screen, 13 days between charges in watch mode, and a strap that takes any 22 mm band, and who is willing to pay $449.99 for it.
Verdict
The Garmin Forerunner 265 is the most complete running spec sheet of the four watches we read for this cluster. Garmin's US product page, checked October 17, 2026, lists a 46.1 x 46.1 x 12.9 mm case, 47 g, a 1.3-inch 416 x 416 AMOLED display behind Gorilla Glass 3, 5 ATM water rating, 8 GB of storage, and battery life of up to 13 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours in GPS-only mode. This is a documentation review built from that page, Garmin's compare tool and Garmin's consumer limited warranty; we did not run with the watch. The strengths are the published battery table with seven modes, the multi-band GNSS option and the 22 mm industry-standard quick-release lugs. The weak rows are a one-year warranty that excludes the battery, a price that has not moved from launch while Garmin now sells the newer Forerunner 570 above it, and a product page that rendered no owner ratings when we read it, so the owner-report section of this review is thinner than we would like.

Where it is strong
- Battery table published for seven modes: 13 days smartwatch, 20 h GPS-only, 16 h SatIQ, 14 h all-systems plus multi-band, 7 / 6.5 / 6 h with music
- 1.3-inch 416 x 416 AMOLED with optional always-on mode, behind Corning Gorilla Glass 3
- 47 g for a 46.1 mm case, with a 42 mm Forerunner 265S option on the same page
- 22 mm quick-release lugs that Garmin itself labels Industry standard, so any 22 mm strap fits
- Five satellite systems plus SatIQ auto-select and multi-band reception, listed on the spec sheet
- Bluetooth, ANT+ and Wi-Fi, plus 8 GB for music and Garmin Pay, all included at the list price
Where it falls short
- One-year Garmin limited warranty that excludes consumable parts such as batteries unless a defect is shown
- $449.99 is the launch price and had not been cut on garmin.com as of October 17, 2026, even though the Forerunner 570 now sits above it in the range
- Garmin proprietary plug charger, not USB-C on the watch
- Gorilla Glass 3 rather than sapphire, and Garmin publishes no hardness figure for the lens
- No owner rating or review count rendered on the Garmin product page when read with a full browser on October 17, 2026

What the Garmin Forerunner 265 actually is
The Forerunner 265 is Garmin's mid-range running watch: a 46 mm fiber-reinforced polymer case with a 1.3-inch AMOLED screen, five buttons plus a touchscreen, and the full Garmin training stack. Garmin's running category page, read October 17, 2026, places it at $449.99 between the Forerunner 165 at $249.99 and the newer Forerunner 570 and 970.
It is a GPS sports watch first and a smartwatch second. The spec sheet lists Garmin Pay, music storage on 8 GB, smart notifications and a Google Maps app for Android phones, but there is no app store comparable to a phone platform, no cellular option and no speaker for calls.
Two sizes share one product page. The 46 mm model, part number 010-02810-00, is 46.1 x 46.1 x 12.9 mm and 47 g. The 42 mm Forerunner 265S is selected from the same page; Garmin's page describes the case size figure as the diameter of the watch housing.
For the vocabulary used below, our watch spec sheet primer explains case size, lug width and water ratings. The same page defines why 5 ATM on a sports watch is not the same claim as the 200 m on the Citizen Promaster diver.

Who the Garmin Forerunner 265 is best for
The Forerunner 265 is built for someone training toward a race, not someone counting steps. Based on the published feature list, these are the buyers it fits.
- Runners following a plan who want PacePro course pacing, training readiness and training status on the wrist
- Anyone who wants a week or more between charges with a color screen; Garmin rates 13 days in smartwatch mode
- Owners of both Android and iPhone devices, since the watch pairs with either and does not lock to a platform
- Runners in cities or under tree cover who want multi-band reception with a published battery cost
- People who swap straps often; the 22 mm quick-release lugs are the industry standard
- Who should skip it: anyone who wants phone-grade apps, calls or voice assistants, and anyone who runs twice a week and would be served by the $199 Coros Pace 3
How the pricing works
There is one price and no subscription. Garmin listed the 46 mm Forerunner 265 at $449.99 on October 17, 2026, with Affirm financing offered at $41 a month and an HSA/FSA eligibility note. The 42 mm 265S is a size option, and Garmin's page did not show a different price for it on the day we read it.
Everything on the spec sheet is included: multi-band GNSS, music storage, Garmin Pay, Connect IQ apps and the training metrics. Garmin Connect, the phone app, is free. Garmin does sell a paid Connect+ tier, but nothing in the Forerunner 265 spec list is gated behind it.
The price has not moved since launch. The watch arrived in 2023 at $449.99 and the same figure stood on garmin.com in October 2026, while the Forerunner 570 now sits above it. That is the main value question with this watch, and we return to it in the value section.
Accessories are extra. Garmin's own 22 mm quick-release bands were $39.99 on the product page. Because the lug width is standard, third-party bands are an option, which is not true of the Apple Watch or the Pixel Watch, both of which use proprietary connectors.
For context on how this price compares with mechanical watches at the same money, our best everyday watches under $500 guide covers the Seiko, Timex, Casio and Citizen options at the same price ceiling.
Ease: fit range, screen and buttons
The ease score is built from three published facts: the strap fits 135 to 205 mm wrists, the AMOLED has an optional always-on mode, and the watch has physical buttons as well as a touchscreen.
The fit range covers most adult wrists. Garmin publishes 135 to 205 mm for the included silicone strap on the 46 mm model. Smaller wrists have the 42 mm 265S on the same page. Compared with the 145 to 215 mm band fit on the Casio G-Shock GA2100, the Garmin range starts 10 mm lower.
The display is 1.3 inches, 32.5 mm in diameter, at 416 x 416 pixels. Garmin lists a large-font option and an optional always-on mode. Garmin publishes no brightness figure in nits for this watch, which is a gap when the Apple Watch and Pixel Watch both publish peak brightness.
Buttons plus touch is the point. Garmin's page lists Touchscreen and buttons as a headline feature. Mid-run operation with wet hands is a documented reason runners prefer buttons; we have not measured it, but the hardware supports both inputs.
Setup needs the Garmin Connect app on a phone. Garmin lists Bluetooth, ANT+ and Wi-Fi, so the watch can sync without the phone once configured. Text replies work on Android only, per the spec sheet.
Features: what the spec sheet does and does not say
The feature score is the highest of the four watches in this cluster because Garmin publishes more running detail than Apple, Google or Coros.
Satellite reception is the clearest example. The sensor list names GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou, SatIQ auto-select and a multi-band mode. The battery table then prices each: 20 hours GPS-only, 16 hours SatIQ, 14 hours all-systems plus multi-band. A buyer can see what accuracy costs in battery before paying.
Health sensors are listed in full: Garmin Elevate wrist heart rate at one reading a second, Pulse Ox for spot checks and optional all-day or sleep tracking, barometric altimeter, compass, gyroscope, accelerometer, thermometer and ambient light sensor. Garmin's page notes the watch is not a medical device and Pulse Ox is not available in all countries.
Training features named on the page include training readiness, training status (listed as improved), PacePro, Body Battery, HRV-based sleep scoring, nap detection, breathing variations and a jet lag adviser. Garmin Share lets nearby Garmin devices exchange courses and workouts.
What the sheet does not say matters too. There is no map layer; the Google Maps feature requires an Android phone and sends turn prompts to the wrist. There is no cellular option, no speaker or microphone and no ECG. Storage is 8 GB, shared between music and data.
For how these rows compare with a running shoe spec sheet, where brands often omit stack height, see our running shoe spec sheet primer. Garmin's watch page is the more complete document of the two.
Value: full-price three years on
The value score is where the Forerunner 265 loses points. At $449.99 it costs $250.99 more than the Coros Pace 3 at $199.00, both read October 17, 2026, and the Coros publishes 38 hours of standard GPS to Garmin's 20.
What the extra money buys is on the sheet: an AMOLED screen instead of a memory LCD, 8 GB instead of 4 GB, Wi-Fi sync, ANT+ plus Bluetooth, Garmin Pay, music streaming apps and a larger training-metric set. Whether those are worth $250 is a per-buyer question, not a spec question.
Against the platform watches, the comparison flips. Apple's 46 mm Series 12 is $449 and Google's 45 mm Pixel Watch 5 is $429.99, both within $21 of the Garmin. Both publish far shorter battery life, 24 hours and 40 hours respectively, against Garmin's 13 days. A runner who wants the week-long charge cycle is paying about the same money for it.
Garmin discounts are a known pattern. The 265 launched in 2023 and Garmin now lists the Forerunner 570 above it. We can only report that no discount appeared on garmin.com on October 17, 2026; retailer prices are not something Garmin publishes.
The 22 mm standard lug adds value over time. A $15 nylon strap works where Apple and Google buyers are limited to proprietary connectors.
Support: one-year warranty, battery excluded
The support score is the lowest row for this watch, and the warranty text is why.
Garmin's consumer limited warranty, read October 17, 2026, covers non-aviation products for one year from the date of purchase against defects in materials or workmanship. Garmin may repair, replace or refund at its option; the customer pays transport. Repaired or replaced devices get 90 days or the remainder of the original year, whichever is longer.
The exclusions are the part to read. The warranty does not apply to cosmetic damage such as scratches, to consumable parts such as batteries unless a defect caused the failure, or to damage from water, accident or misuse. For a watch sold on a 13-day battery claim, a battery that fades in year two is outside warranty unless Garmin accepts it as a defect.
Coros publishes a 2-year global warranty on the same class of watch at less than half the price. Apple and Google both publish one year, so Garmin is in line with the platform watches and behind Coros.
Support channels are not on the product page. Garmin's site links a Support Center and a Find a Dealer page; phone and chat hours were not read for this review. The Garmin Connect app and firmware updates are free.
What verified owners report
We have less owner data for this watch than we want, and we will say so rather than fill the gap.
Garmin's product page carries an owner rating module, but when we loaded the page with a full browser on October 17, 2026, the rating and review count did not render in the page text. We did not take numbers from search result snippets or from third-party aggregators, because that is a rule on this site.
What we can report is structural. The Forerunner 265 has been on sale since 2023, long enough for a firmware record; Garmin publishes software updates for it on its support site. The battery figures above are Garmin's own claims and, per the spec page, engineering enhancements are ongoing and may not be reflected in the specifications.
When verified owner data becomes readable on the Garmin page or on a retailer with verified-purchase labelling, this section will be updated and dated. The same caveat applied to the Hoka Clifton review, where the brand page published no owner rating at all.
Alternatives
Three watches overlap with the Forerunner 265 for a runner, and the choice between them is mostly about battery and ecosystem.
Coros Pace 3. Choose it if price and GPS battery matter most: $199.00 (down from $229.00) with 38 hours of standard GPS and a 2-year warranty, read October 17, 2026. Otherwise choose the Garmin for the AMOLED screen, 8 GB storage, Wi-Fi, ANT+ and the larger metric set.
Apple Watch Series 12. Choose it if you own an iPhone and want one device for payments, messages and workouts; the 46 mm aluminum GPS model is $449. Otherwise choose the Garmin for 13 days of battery against Apple's 24 hours and 20 GPS hours against Apple's 10.
Google Pixel Watch 5. Choose it if you use Android and want dual-frequency GPS in a round 45 mm case at $429.99 with a 3,000-nit screen. Otherwise choose the Garmin, since Google publishes no GPS-hours figure and rates the 45 mm at up to 40 hours total.
For a non-GPS alternative that still swims and survives the gym, the Casio G-Shock GA2100 at $110 is 51 g with a three-year battery, but it records nothing.
Bottom line
The Garmin Forerunner 265 earns the top feature score in our sports watch cluster on the strength of its published spec sheet: seven battery modes, five satellite systems with multi-band, a full sensor list and a standard 22 mm lug.
The case against it is price and warranty. $449.99 in October 2026 is the 2023 launch figure, the Coros Pace 3 undercuts it by $250.99 with longer GPS battery and double the warranty, and Garmin's one year excludes the battery.
Buy it if you train seriously and want the screen, the metrics and the week-long charge in one device. If you run casually, a lighter spend will cover you. And if you are new to running altogether, the shoes matter more than the watch; our daily trainers for new runners guide is the place to start.
Buy it if
- You run four or more days a week and want pace, course and recovery screens on the watch rather than on a phone
- You want a watch that lasts a full week or more between charges and still has a bright color screen
- You already own 22 mm straps or want to buy cheap ones; the lugs are the industry standard width
- You use Android or iPhone and do not want the watch tied to either platform
Skip it if
- You want phone-grade apps, payments everywhere and voice assistants; a platform smartwatch does that better
- You want a 2-year warranty at this price; Garmin gives 1 year and excludes the battery
- You will not use the training metrics; a $199 watch with 38 hours of GPS covers a beginner's needs
Frequently asked
How much does the Garmin Forerunner 265 cost in 2026?
Garmin's US store listed the 46 mm Forerunner 265 at $449.99 on October 17, 2026, with the 42 mm Forerunner 265S offered as a size option on the same page. That is the price the watch launched at in 2023; garmin.com showed no discount on the day we read it.
How long does the Forerunner 265 battery last with GPS on?
Garmin publishes up to 20 hours in GPS-only mode, 16 hours with SatIQ auto-select, and 14 hours with all systems plus multi-band enabled, as of October 2026. Playing music from the watch cuts those to 7, 6.5 and 6 hours. Smartwatch mode is rated at up to 13 days.
Is the Forerunner 265 waterproof?
Garmin rates it 5 ATM, which Garmin's water rating page defines as suitable for swimming and showering but not for diving or high-speed water sports. The rating applies to the case; the silicone strap has no rating of its own.
What size is the Forerunner 265 and will it fit a small wrist?
The 46 mm model measures 46.1 x 46.1 x 12.9 mm, weighs 47 g and ships with a strap for 135 to 205 mm wrists, per Garmin. For wrists under about 150 mm, Garmin sells the same watch as the 42 mm Forerunner 265S, selectable on the same product page.
Does the Forerunner 265 have multi-band GPS?
Yes. Garmin's spec sheet lists GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou with SatIQ technology and an all-systems plus multi-band mode. Garmin publishes battery cost for that mode, 14 hours, but publishes no accuracy figure in meters.
Can I use any strap on the Forerunner 265?
Garmin lists the lugs as 22 mm quick release, Industry standard. Any 22 mm quick-release strap should fit; Garmin's own replacement bands were $39.99 on the product page on October 17, 2026.
What warranty does Garmin give on the Forerunner 265?
Garmin's consumer limited warranty covers non-aviation products for one year from purchase against defects in materials or workmanship. It excludes cosmetic damage and consumable parts such as batteries unless a defect caused the damage. Repaired or replaced units get 90 days or the remainder of the original year.
