Shoe care and watch strap starter kit: 3 picks
Our top pick for a first strap-and-shoe-care kit is the Barton Leather Quick Release Watch Band, $37.99 on bartonwatchbands.com as of October 17, 2026: seven widths from 16 to 24 mm, tool-free spring bars and a one-year satisfaction guarantee. For sneakers and running shoes the pick is the Jason Markk Essential Kit at $18.00. For welted calf dress shoes and boots it is Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovateur at $30.95, plus a cream. Bought together the three cost $86.94 at list, our sum. We read maker and retailer pages, policies and Trustpilot on October 17, 2026; we did not use any of the three. How we picked is below.
Our picks
- Best first watch strap: Barton Leather Quick Release Watch Band
- Best sneaker cleaning kit: Jason Markk Essential Kit
- Best for welted dress shoes: Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovateur
The starter kit at a glance
Three products, three jobs: one strap for the wrist, one cleaner for sneakers, one conditioner for dress leather. Prices are list prices read on October 17, 2026. The scores are averages on our four-pillar rubric, explained in How we picked.
1. Barton Leather Quick Release Watch Band: best first watch strap, for any watch with standard spring-bar lugs from 16 to 24 mm. $37.99. Average 4.25.
2. Jason Markk Essential Kit: best sneaker cleaning kit, for leather, canvas and rubber, with a soft brush added for knit and suede. $18.00. Average 4.0.
3. Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovateur: best for welted dress shoes, for smooth calf, goat and cordovan, followed by a pigmented cream. $30.95. Average 3.8.
The three together come to $86.94 at list, our arithmetic. Add the $28.95 Pommadier cream the Saphir retailers pair with Renovateur and the total is $115.89. Shipping is extra in every case: Barton charges a flat rate, Jason Markk is free only over $49, and Kirby Allison charges carrier rates.

If you only own sneakers and a watch on a strap, you need picks 1 and 2 and can stop at $55.99. If you own a welted shoe, the Saphir step is the one that protects the most expensive item in the closet.
Start with what you own, not with the shop
A starter kit is only useful if each item matches something already in your closet or on your wrist. The list below maps the products in this guide to the watches and shoes reviewed on Wrist & Sole, using the figures each maker publishes.
- Timex Marlin Automatic, 20 mm lugs per Timex: Barton leather quick release in 20 mm
- Citizen Promaster Diver BN0150, 20 mm per Citizen: Barton in 20 mm for dry days; keep the polyurethane strap for the water
- Seiko 5 Sports SRPD55, 22 mm per Seiko: Barton in 22 mm as a leather alternative to the steel bracelet
- Casio G-Shock GA2100 and Apple Watch Series 12: no standard lug, so no Barton leather strap; Casio's band is integrated and Apple's connector is proprietary
- Nike Air Force 1 '07, VEJA Campo and adidas Samba OG: Jason Markk kit, with a soft brush for the Samba's suede
- Allbirds Tree Runner, Brooks Ghost and Hoka Clifton: Jason Markk solution with a soft brush such as the Delicates, since the stiff brush in the box is stated only for leather, rubber and plastic
- Grant Stone Cap Toe Oxford and Thursday Boot Captain: Saphir Renovateur, then a cream
- Red Wing Iron Ranger and Blundstone 550: none of the three; oil-tanned and water-resistant boot leathers are not on either care page
Two of the products cover a wide spread of what we review; one covers a narrow but valuable slice. That pattern drives the order below more than the scores do.
Best first watch strap: Barton Leather Quick Release
Barton's black leather quick release band lists at $37.99 on bartonwatchbands.com, checked October 17, 2026, with the best-selling leather colours at the same price. It is top-grain leather with 316L stainless steel hardware and integrated quick-release spring bars.
The width grid is the reason it leads. The product page lists 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 24 mm, and the sizing guide adds 23 mm, noting that odd widths are cut only in the Elite Silicone, Leather and Alligator Grain lines. Most strap shops stop at even sizes.
Length is covered too: Standard for 5 to 8 inch wrists and Long for 7 to 9 inch wrists, per the product page. The FAQ is candid that leather quick release bands are harder to fit than silicone or canvas because leather does not stretch.
The guarantee is the strongest after-sale term in this guide: refund or exchange for any reason within the first year, by email, per Barton's guarantee page. On Trustpilot the company showed 4.4 out of 5 from 275 reviews on October 17, 2026.
Limits are stated plainly. Lining, thickness and buckle width are not published. The page excludes every Garmin, the Suunto 9 and the Suunto Traverse by name, and shipping is a flat rate per order with no free-shipping threshold.
Why it sits at #1: the highest average on our rubric, 4.25, with support at 4.3, and it fits three of the five watches we review. Our note on how to read a watch spec sheet explains where to find your lug width before ordering.
Best sneaker cleaning kit: Jason Markk Essential Kit
The Essential Kit is $18.00 on jasonmarkk.com as of October 17, 2026: a 4 fl oz (118 mL) bottle of Premium Deep Cleaning Solution and a stiff-bristle Durables brush. The packaging rates the bottle at up to 100 pairs.
The page prints its full ingredient list, led by water, potassium cocoate, propanediol and glycerin, and a safe-material list: leather, suede, nubuck, canvas, cotton and knits. It excludes unsealed or painted leather and warns that dyed suede may bleed.
Read the brush line twice. The stiff brush is stated for full-grain leather, rubber and plastic. For premium leather, suede, nubuck, cotton and knits the maker names its soft Delicates brush, sold separately. All four running shoes we review have knit or mesh uppers, which the stiff brush is not stated for.
After-sale terms are the weak point. Returns run 14 days from delivery, sealed and unused only, with the buyer paying postage and no exchanges. A 120-day manufacturing-defect warranty sits on the FAQ page. The unclaimed Trustpilot profile showed 13 reviews at 1.9 out of 5, too small a sample to weigh heavily.
Why it sits at #2: an average of 4.0, with ease at 4.5 and value at 4.3, and it reaches eight of the twelve shoes we review. It falls below Barton on support, where its 3.2 reflects the short, sealed-only return window.
Our everyday sneakers guide and daily trainers guide list the uppers this kit is meant for.
Best for welted dress shoes: Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovateur
Renovateur is a 75 ml conditioning cream, $30.95 at kirbyallison.com and $29.95 at The Shoe Care Shop's U.S. store, both checked October 17, 2026. Saphir's European shop lists it at 20.65 euros. Kirby Allison's listing states Made in France.
The retailers name its base: mink oil and beeswax on both pages, with lanolin added on Kirby Allison's. The leathers listed are smooth ones, box calf, goat and cordovan. Suede, nubuck, patent and oil-tanned leather are not addressed.
It is the first of two steps. The Shoe Care Shop says Renovateur offers no protection and always needs a follow-up product; Kirby Allison lists the Médaille d'Or Pommadier cream at $28.95. Usage is capped at once a week, per The Shoe Care Shop and Saphir's own shop.
Support is thin. No maker warranty is published, Kirby Allison accepts returns within 30 days unused, and The Shoe Care Shop lists 45 days. When we read avel.com, the maker's site, on October 17, 2026, it showed no Médaille d'Or Renovateur page or formula.
Why it sits at #3: an average of 3.8, held down by value at 3.6 once the second product is counted, and support at 3.3. It ranks last on the rubric but protects the costliest pairs: the Grant Stone oxford lists at $395 and is resoleable. Our resoleable boots and dress shoes guide explains why care pays off on a welted shoe.

What the starter kit leaves out, and what it costs to fill the gaps
Each pick is incomplete on its own terms, and the makers say so. The add-ons below are the ones the product pages themselves point to, with list prices where we read them on October 17, 2026.
- A pigmented cream after Renovateur: Saphir Médaille d'Or Pommadier, $28.95 for 75 ml at Kirby Allison
- A soft brush for knit, mesh and suede: Jason Markk's Delicates brush, sold separately; we did not record its price on the checking date
- A spring bar tool for straps without quick-release bars, or for buckle swaps: Barton lists one at $14.99
- Spare spring bars: Barton sells packets of four, conventional at $12.99 and quick release at $13.99
- A care product for oil-tanned work boots such as the Iron Ranger: the boot maker's own oil is the category to look at; we have not reviewed one
None of these is required on day one. A buyer with sneakers and a 20 mm watch needs only the Barton strap and the Jason Markk kit; the Delicates brush becomes necessary the first time a knit runner gets muddy.
A first-weekend routine, in the order the makers print it
These steps are condensed from the makers' and retailers' own directions, read October 17, 2026. They are not a method of ours, and we have not timed or performed them.
- Strap: check the lug width on the maker's spec sheet, order that exact width, then slide each quick-release lever to fit the bars; Barton says the width must match exactly or the bars will not seat
- Sneakers: dry brush, put solution on the bristles, dip the brush in water and shake, scrub in circles, wipe and air dry, per the Jason Markk page and box; its leather tutorial adds a warning to wipe away excess to avoid uneven drying
- Dress shoes: brush off dust, apply a small amount of Renovateur with a cloth in circles, wait three minutes (Kirby Allison) to ten minutes (The Shoe Care Shop), buff, then apply the cream
- Repeat Renovateur no more than once a week, per the retailers; there is no stated interval for the Jason Markk kit
Do the strap first. It is the only step that cannot stain anything, and a Barton band fitted to the wrong width goes back under the one-year guarantee, while an opened Jason Markk bottle cannot be returned at all.
How to choose your own starter kit
Ask what the watch is fastened with. If the spec sheet lists a lug width between 16 and 24 mm and a standard spring bar, a quick-release leather strap fits. If the band is integrated or the connector proprietary, skip the strap line entirely.
Ask what the shoe uppers are made of. Sealed leather, canvas and rubber suit a stiff brush and a water-based cleaner. Knit and mesh need a soft brush. Smooth calf on a welted sole needs a conditioner and a cream, not a detergent.
Ask how the shoe is built. A cemented sneaker is retired when its sole wears, so $18 of care is the right scale. A Goodyear-welted shoe can be resoled, which our note on welt, Blake and cemented construction explains, so spending more on its leather makes sense.
Ask how big your wrist is. Barton cuts the leather band in a Standard length for 5 to 8 inch wrists and a Long length for 7 to 9 inch wrists, per its product page. A wrist near 7 or 8 inches falls inside both, so the choice comes down to how much tail you want past the keeper.
Ask where the shoes are worn. A running shoe that sees mud weekly needs the cleaner more often than a leather sneaker kept for the office, and a dress shoe worn twice a month will not reach the once-a-week Renovateur limit at all.
Ask what you can return. Barton gives a year, the Saphir retailers 30 to 45 days unused, Jason Markk 14 days sealed. If you are unsure of a size or material, buy the product with the longest window first.
Bottom line
Start with the Barton leather quick release strap if your watch has standard lugs; it is the best documented and best guaranteed of the three. Add the Jason Markk Essential Kit for sneakers, and the soft brush if they are knit.
Add Saphir Renovateur, plus a cream, only when a welted calf shoe joins the closet; it is the narrowest pick and the one that guards the most expensive pair. Every figure on this page was read on October 17, 2026, and no product was used by us.
Also compared
Saphir Médaille d'Or Pommadier Cream. $28.95 for 75 ml at Kirby Allison on October 17, 2026. It is the colour-and-wax step after Renovateur rather than a starter item, so it is listed as an add-on, not a pick.
Barton Elite Silicone Quick Release band. $28.99 on bartonwatchbands.com on October 17, 2026, 18 to 24 mm with a 2 mm taper. Cheaper and easier to fit per Barton's FAQ, but the leather band covers more office and dress use, so it was preferred.
BandsCo Straps. A smartwatch band store with a 100-day money-back guarantee per its home page. The quick-release bands we found were listed for older Samsung Galaxy Watches, and no leather strap for a watch such as the Timex Marlin or Seiko 5 was listed, so it was noted rather than ranked.
Jason Markk Repel spray and Leather Balm. Sold separately by Jason Markk, each with its own exclusions on the leather tutorial page: the spray not for unsealed or vegetable-tanned leather, the balm not for suede or nubuck. Useful second purchases, not first ones.
Best first watch strap: Barton Leather Quick Release Watch Band
Barton's top-grain leather band lists at $37.99 on bartonwatchbands.com as of October 17, 2026, in 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 24 mm, with 23 mm in the sizing guide. Integrated quick-release spring bars mean no tool for the first fit, though the FAQ says leather is harder to install than silicone. Standard and Long lengths cover 5 to 9 inch wrists. A one-year refund-or-exchange guarantee and a 4.4 Trustpilot score from 275 reviews back it. Lining, thickness and buckle width are not published, and Garmin and two Suunto models are excluded by name.
Highest average on our rubric, 4.25, with the longest after-sale window in this guide; it fits three of the five watches we review.

Best sneaker cleaning kit: Jason Markk Essential Kit
Jason Markk's Essential Kit is $18.00 on jasonmarkk.com as of October 17, 2026: a 4 fl oz (118 mL) water-based solution with a printed ingredient list and a stiff Durables brush. The page clears the solution for leather, suede, nubuck, canvas, cotton and knits, excluding unsealed or painted leather. The brush is stated for full-grain leather, rubber and plastic only, so knit and mesh runners call for a soft brush such as the Delicates, sold separately. Returns are 14 days, sealed only, buyer pays postage; a 120-day defect warranty is on the FAQ page.
An average of 4.0, with ease at 4.5 and value at 4.3, and it reaches eight of our twelve shoes; support at 3.2 keeps it below Barton.

Best for welted dress shoes: Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovateur
Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovateur is a 75 ml mink-oil and beeswax conditioner, $30.95 at Kirby Allison and $29.95 at The Shoe Care Shop on October 17, 2026, with Made in France on the Kirby Allison listing. The retailers list box calf, goat and cordovan, cap use at once a week and say it gives no protection, so a cream such as the $28.95 Pommadier follows. No maker warranty is published; returns run 30 days unused at Kirby Allison and 45 at The Shoe Care Shop.
An average of 3.8, lowest of the three because value counts the second product and support is thin; it ranks third on the rubric but guards the costliest shoes.

How we chose
We did not run tests of our own; grades come from documentation, pricing pages and verified user reports checked on October 17, 2026. Each product is scored on four pillars. Ease: how many steps and tools the maker's directions require. Features: what the page states about materials, sizes and limits. Value: list price against the watches and shoes in our edit that it actually serves. Support: guarantee, warranty, returns and shipping terms. Ranking follows the average of the four. The three products do different jobs, so the rank says which page is best documented and best covered, not which one to buy first; that depends on what you own. No affiliate relationship exists with Barton, Jason Markk, Saphir or the retailers named, and no link on this page carries a commission.
Frequently asked
What should a beginner shoe care and watch strap kit include?
One strap that matches your watch's lug width, one cleaner for sneakers and, if you own welted calf shoes, one conditioner plus a cream. Our picks cost $86.94 together at list on October 17, 2026, or $115.89 with the Saphir cream.
Do I need a spring bar tool for a quick release strap?
Not for the strap itself. Barton's quick-release bands have integrated levers, so the first fit needs no tool. Barton sells a $14.99 spring bar tool for conventional bars and buckle swaps, and its FAQ calls the tool helpful for beginners but not always necessary.
Can I use the Jason Markk kit on dress shoes?
On sealed smooth leather, the page allows the solution; it excludes unsealed or painted leather. It cleans only and adds no oil. For welted calf such as the Grant Stone oxford, the retailers' Renovateur-then-cream routine is the documented path.
Will a Barton strap fit my Apple Watch or G-Shock?
Not the leather quick release band directly. The Casio G-Shock GA2100 has an integrated resin band and the Apple Watch uses a proprietary connector. Barton sells separate Apple Watch bands, and its FAQ says its adapters work with any 22 mm Barton band.
How much does the full starter kit cost?
$37.99 for the Barton strap, $18.00 for the Jason Markk kit and $30.95 for Renovateur at Kirby Allison, as of October 17, 2026: $86.94 before shipping, our sum. Adding the $28.95 Pommadier cream brings it to $115.89.
Which of the three has the best return policy?
Barton, with a one-year refund or exchange for any reason. The Saphir retailers allow 30 days unused (Kirby Allison) or 45 days (The Shoe Care Shop). Jason Markk allows 14 days for sealed items only, as of October 17, 2026.
